Humanities in Medicine in Arizona promotes the artful and compassionate delivery of healthcare by connecting communities of patients, families, staff, students and the public through engaging programs and events.

Bedside arts programs

Sonata del Sol is an artist-in-residence program that brings comfort to patients through a live music experience at the bedside.
Poesía del Sol pairs creative writers and patients at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Written compositions based on conversations at the bedside are presented to the patient, celebrating remembered times.
Visual Art at the Bedside gives patients and their caregivers an opportunity to engage in creative activities during their hospital stays. Visual Art at the Bedside matches a professional artist facilitator with patients at Mayo Clinic Hospital in individual patient rooms or group settings in collaboration with Recreation Therapy.
Therapeutic Movement unites professional Flamenco artists with certified therapeutic recreation specialists to increase physical, mental and emotional well-being of patients through dance.
Improv for Patients and Visitors crafts special experiences for patients and visitors with specially trained actors from The Phoenix Theatre Company's Partners That Heal troupe, who use creative drama techniques such as story, drama, improvisation, puppetry and music.

Visual art exhibitions

The unveiling of the inaugural exhibition in the Scottsdale Concourse Gallery in 1998 marked the opening of the Center for Humanities in Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Since then, the Loaned Artwork Program has continuously hosted exhibits of original works of art in what has expanded to 18 galleries throughout Mayo facilities in the Phoenix metro area.

The center features a wide variety of local and regional artists' work as well as special themed or traveling exhibitions and historical displays. Artists are welcome to apply to the program at any time throughout the year. Email [email protected] to request application information.

Performances and events

The Center for Humanities in Medicine hosts weekly live performances and world-class special events for inclusive audiences. Most events are open to the public and are free of charge.

Atrium Music Series features weekly concerts by accomplished musicians for patients, visitors and staff. They are free and open to the public from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Hospital Atrium and Wednesdays in the Mayo Clinic Building Atrium.
