Navigating social determinants of health

Social determinants of health are nonmedical factors that can affect a person's health. These factors include where someone lives, household income, access to healthy food and availability of transportation.

When someone has cancer, these factors can make a big difference in how well the person navigates treatment and survivorship. For example:

  • Money. Personal finances can make it hard to afford treatments and medicines.
  • Transportation. Living far from a hospital or lacking access to a reliable vehicle can make it hard to attend medical appointments.
  • Food. Access to affordable, nutritious food is essential for staying healthy.

The Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center provides a list of national and state resources to help people in Arizona, Florida and Midwest communities access quality cancer care and lead healthier lives.
